Bugwema Water Project
Bugwema is an impoverished rural village community in the Mara region of Tanzania. Largely surviving on subsistence farming, they have only two means of obtaining water: either from muddy waterholes which are dug to collect rain water (and the rains have failed early 2017) or involving a 3km walk by the women to Lake Victoria where the women wade out to the clean water (or helped by your boys as we witnessed) at the risk of water snakes, crocodiles or infection through the bilharzia parasite. The 20ltr containers of water are then carried on their head back home. taking about 2-3 hrs this is not a job to do more than once a day. The villagers discussed the difficulties they had to endure just to gain water which led to funding being secured to build a pumping station at the lake to bring water into the village. All the villagers volunteered to dig the pipe trench!
