Roland Mier – Ambulance Dispatcher with Yorkshire Ambulance
"I have worked at Yorkshire Ambulance Service, first as a call taker and now as an Ambulance Despatcher for over fifteen years. Having worked in various customers service roles I wanted to end my working career making a difference to people’s lives.
My role primarily involves dispatching ambulances to emergency calls. I must use my judgement and training to review jobs and dispatch the most appropriate resource. This often involves diverting ambulances from less urgent calls so l must trust in experience and prioritise the most poorly patients. There are protocols that YAS has to achieve so l have to continually monitor the workload and highlight calls for further triage to ensure patients are receiving the best possible response. My job also involves supporting ambulance crews and ensuring their safety and wellbeing especially after they have had difficult jobs.
The best part of my job is that I can see instantly that my work is helping people. I love being a part of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service family! That is honestly what it feels like – we all work hard and do long hours and everybody just wants to do their best to help patients. We are all part of a vital chain and that feels great."
