Bugwema is one of the poorest villages in the region of Mara, Tanzania. With water obtained either from muddy waterholes or by walking 3-5km to Lake Victoria, life is desperately hard. Visiting the village a second time to help instigate a water project, I took the opportunity to obtain portraits of some of the villagers before one of our meetings. I wanted to capture the strength of character and determination I'd seen in their faces and decided on a simple setup using b+w film, the camera on tripod, a bench seat, a piece of white background cloth, bought from the local market, and natural available light.
I am proud that these 6 prints were shortlisted into the second round of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2017
